"Pena ao Mar" is the debut solo album by Brazilian, berlin-based musician and sound artist Carla Boregas (also known for her ongoing duo with M.Takara, RAKTA and FRONTE VIOLETA).

Throughout its eight compositions of subtle and progressive transformations, the album builds a sonic scenery where the sensation of presence and discovery lies between density and delicacy, accompanied sometimes by the idea of a collective wind instrument to be played by several musicians at the same time.

Emphasized by the gentle variations that slowly unfold into deep textures, such as the title track Pena ao Mar, Carla fashions each sound as a writing of the invisible, using electronic instruments (analog and digital synthesizers and effects) alongside organic sounds. In the opening track processed sounds of a cactus exist in parallel to a circular melody. In Vagalhão, the sound of a gong merges with a synthesizer and a daily-life field recording as background. In Sopro, the primary use of the voice through the word is deconstructed and fragmented into an abrupt change of mood, now led by an electric piano.

Within the range of sonorities employed in the compositions, there are also cassette tape recordings, as in the drone piece Grafia do Invisîvel / Suprime o Exterior, highlighting the temporal and intimate aspects of the sonic atmosphere brought by the record.

Intense and hypnotic, Pena ao Mar reminds us of the complexity and fragility of being alive.
